MONTANA COLORS ARTISTS BANNERS SERIES X IBIE

Going on with the ‘Montana Colors Artists Banners series now it’s time for IBIE from Barcelona representing BCBruta/ RRArmy Studio/ Finerats Magazine. Here’s a brief interview with him for you to take a look at…

When did you take to painting on the streets of Barcelona?

I began tagging in ‘93 with a friend from class. We’d head out every Friday to buy a can of spray; I never managed to get back home with a full can.

Who did you do that with? Anyone from the present ‘Bcbruta’ crew?

We had a group called ABK, we painted around Carmel and Horta, but they all gave it up and I lost track of them.

What identifies you from the rest?

The fact that we do combined murals; most people get together to paint and just do it one next to the other, but in the end they may as well have just painted alone.

How do you define your style? What technique do you usually use?

My style is careless and spontaneous; I often improvise and work quickly. For walls, I use latex paint combined with spray.

How do you split your day between studio work and the rest of your hobbies? Any confessions?

I don’t have a fixed schedule with anything, my life is a bit of a mix of everything. Since I have my studio at home, it’s hard to delineate when I finish doing one thing and start another.

What can you say about your experience as co-editior for Finerats? Is there still a gap in the market for this type of publication?

It’s very difficult to put out this type of publication, as we’re no experts and we never managed to get good financing.

People seem to really value it, we’re getting lots of great proposals, and we nearly always manage to pack our events, but right now we’re trying to get extra money for the new copy by selling past productions, but it’s not quite working, maybe because everyone already has it or they don’t want to spend money on past issues.

How would you describe the artistic scene in Barcelona right now?

It seems a bit spread out. There are lots of people doing stuff; expositions, movements…but everyone’s doing their own separate thing.

In terms of illustration, are there any names you feel should be mentioned? Any young talent?

There’s lots… Jim FLora, Ed Roth, Gary Baseman, Speedy Graphito, Laurent Impeduglia, Misaki Kawai, Keis, Brecht Vandenbroucke, Liquen, Pelucas, Fasim…

The guys from Biografiktion will be coming to Barcelona for the Illustration Festival; we did some publicizing for them, they’re pretty hardcore. I also really like the work of Blob who I painted with the last few times, the Interesni Kazki who are doing some great things from the Ukraine, Sawe and Aryz here in Barcelona, my colleagues in Bcbruta, Rotor, Uiu, Edjinn…yeah, I dunno, there’s lots.

Is contemporary society the best food for illustrators? What specific moments do you use as sources of inspiration?

Yeah, almost everything that’s being painted nowadays is pop art, in all cultures and with all tastes.

The moment that I want to paint is the visit I had with my dentist last week. On the other hand, I’m very interested in the New world order, the Illuminati, and all of those conspiracy movements.

This ‘creative liberty space’ that we used to have in Barcelona…it’s no longer what it used to be?

Everything is much more controlled now. There’s no energy on the streets now, I’ve stopped even noticing it.

* Quick questions, fast answers:

Music?

I listen to lots of music, mainly from the ’50s or ’70s, and when I don’t know what to put on, I stick on some Otis Redding.

The last crappy film you saw?

I saw Black Dynamite last week, it’s so crap I’d recommend seeing it.

And the best?

The last one I saw that I liked was Little Miss Sunshine; since seeing that, I haven’t seen anything that I would recommend.

A city for living in?

I prefer to live in a town, like where I live now, Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana.

A city for going out in?

Barcelona is great for partying.

A city for painting?

Barcelona in 2003

If you have to paint with spray paint, would you choose Hardcore or 94?

Hardcore…I haven’t tried 94 yet though everyone says it’s great.

A color?

It depends on which period I’m in; right now it’s red.

Upcoming projects?

In July, I’ll be travelling with my brother Edjinn to present an expo in the Dama Aflita Gallery in Porto, and then we’ll head to the Creature Festival in Lodi, Italy, to do some painting. I’m also doing a series with an old friend for the Internet called, ‘No es país para mariachis’ (‘It’s no country for Mariachis’).
