A 20 year veteran of street art, Canadian Patrick Evoke hops as often geographically from place to place as he does from painting to painting. Patrick records his experiences in a way that visually criss-crosses between the real and the unreal, the seen and the unseen, and shares the bullshit that gets stuck in between.
As a result, Patrick’s work in the studio or in the street develops through a self-coined process he refers to as “mistakism,” whereby he allows a memory, feeling, sentence, or some other bite of information to spark the beginning of a particular work. Imagery follows, inspired by the “in between” places found throughout the Canadian landscape or the 30+ countries he has travelled. These recalled memories converge into dreamlike scenes where imaginary characters, forms and marks can interact in a place that is whimsical as well as charged with commentary.
The artist will exhibit a new batch of work at Montana Gallery before beginning a three month printmaking residency in Guanlan China followed by a two month residency at Desa Seni in Ubud, Bali.
His work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions including: BAC! 07 Babylon International Festival of Contemporary Art in Barcelona VIII Edition, Mistakism at The Trace Gallery in Zurich Switzerland as well as Housepaint at the Royal Ontario Museum Institute for Contemporary Culture in Toronto Canada.
