During these dates there is a alternative calendar that maintains its periodicity year after year. It is that of the Swiss writer Rosy One, with her 100% graffiti oldschool style. For the launch of the publication of her almanac we have submitted this great artist to a brief questionnaire oriented towards the theme of colors. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Rosy One’s Top Choice.

-It seems hard to get inspiration for the topic of your calendar year after year. Where do you get your ideas from?
I have a list of calendar-topic-ideas…. it is always a pleasure to work in a series of at least 12 pages (the 12 months of the calendar) on one topic. it opens a lot of possibilities.

My record collection stops in 1995…

-All the themes that give meaning to each month are mostly framed in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Aren’t you attracted by the music of the 2000s?
I am listening to new music! but my record collection stops in 1995…

-Do you think there’s a parallel between your graffiti style and the style of music you like?
Yes of course. I am always listening to music while i draw. and music gives me a lot of inspiration. I often write quotes or the title of the song next to the sketch.

But if i had to choose some colours, I would for sure choose: Poison Green, Max Green, Ufo Green, Avatar Blue, Manga Pink…

-We see that every month represents the subject of each tune. Does the colours also represent the music of each theme, and if so, how?
This year i chose the theme “melodies”. The melodies goes through all the month in a rainbow coloured ribbon. For me colours are very important.
warm colours like “Manga Pink” stands for the hot weather, cold colours like “Arctic Blue” stands for wintertime and cold wind…

-In your creations there is always a noticeable presence of bright colours such as light green, pink or light blue. Which are your favourites and why?
I don’t have one color that I like more than the others, but many colors that i prefer. it’s always a question of how you combine them. Funnily enough I don’t give lot of attention on the search of good colour combinations, i am doing it very intuitive…
But if i had to choose some colours, I would for sure choose: Poison Green, Max Green, Ufo Green, Avatar Blue, Manga Pink, Black and White…

I was always very unsatisfied with the finished piece, when i did white or bright outlines.”

-Colors you would never use?
No white outlines!
I was always very unsatisfied with the finished piece, when i did white or bright outlines.
That is one thing i would avoid.
But all of the other coulours I would love to try in a good colour-combination.

-Name a graffiti writer you especially like for his or her expertise with colors.
Hard to say… I must say that Vaughn Bodé was always a big colour inspiration. Jepsy (can2) in the 90’s, GoldenGreen, Opium etc… and so many others…

The Rosy One calendar once again shows us how painting and music in its combination gives rise to truly stimulating artistic works. Due to that we have chosen to publish the clues that appears in each of the twelve illustrations. Enjoy it.
