“SAEIO 2009-2014” THE MOST ANTICIPATED REISSUE OF 2023

Graffiti is aging and is now part of the domain of art history. Books on graffiti, or specific graffiti artists, are increasingly numerous, but only some of them become cult publications, “must-haves” in a collection. In 2023, we saw the release of gems like Bando’s Black Book, but very few reeditions of important books that have become rare or too inaccessible. It’s the case with the monograph “Saeio 2009-2014,” which unfortunately had been out of reach for a few years.

Saeio, whose real name was Paul Bourgineau (1987-2017) and who is known as the father of “street painting,” influenced an entire generation of graffiti writers in France and around the world. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, with other members of his crew (PAL), they “freed” graffiti from its aesthetic codes, which had become hermetic over time. A blend of abstract painting and pure graffiti. A style that left no one indifferent, generally generating great admiration or complete disdain. According to some of his comrades, his style resembled Art Brut, but what definitely characterized it, was the deconstruction of “classic” graffiti through rough color contrasts, raw textures, and, above all, very expressive gestures. Furthermore, Saeio’s work extended beyond the street; he was a multidisciplinary artist who also expressed himself through video, poetry, and performance. He was extremely prolific, to the point where he became a model for the new school.

Originally published in 2015, the monograph “Saeio 2009-2014” is the result of two years of close dialogue between the artist and Éditions Peinture. Its content documents Saeio’s graffiti and tags created between 2009 and 2014 through a wide range of images, accompanied by an extensive interview. Out of print since 2017, the book was highly sought after, and that’s why Éditions Peinture decided to reissue it. No one is complaining, and we are very happy to see that Saeio’s work can continue to live on and influence the graffiti or artistic scene.
