Like every year, Montana shop & Gallery Barcelona celebrates La Diada de Sant Jordi (Saint George’s day) in its proper way.
The celebration of Dia del Libro (The day of the book) on the 23rd of April has a long history in Spain, and is celebrated ever since 1923 in memory of Miguel de Cervantes who died this very day .
Spanish editors has been promoting this date which finally went official in the whole state in 1930.
Since it also coincides with the death of Shakespeare, William Wordsworth and Joseph Pla, Unesco finally approved the 23rd of April as the “International World Book and Copyright Day”.
In Catalonia this day also coincides with Saint George’s day (Diada de Sant Jordi), which traditionally celebrates the legend of Saint George, the knight from Capadocia: Our loved ones (family and couples) shares books and roses as a gift to express their affection. The roses in relation to the legend which says that the blood of the dragon which Saint George killed came out as roses.
