Graffiti also serves as a way to break down barriers. The Sit al-hita collective, founded in Egypt in 2013, know this well, and their objective is to give visibility to women in public space through graffiti and street art.
Since Arab Spring broke out in 2011, clandestine street painting has become the most effective art form for rebellious expression in Egypt. After thoroughly documenting the phenomenon, Mia Gröndahl noticed that female presence in the painted depictions was subpar. That’s when she decided to start the Sit al-hita platform with Angie Balata, that up until now, has decorated murals in Cairo, Copenhagen, and Amman.
“It’s not just about representing women. The mere fact that men can see a woman painted on the street, 50 meters up from the ground on a crane, sends a message.”
Different Spanish media have reported on the news of this collective’s work over the past few days. This helps to confirm the importance of graffiti to human beings, as a means for taking action and for public expression anywhere in the world.
