Sebas Velasco (Burgos, 1988) returns to Barcelona in a big way with “Permanent Midnight”, a well deserved solo exhibition at Montana Gallery Barcelona.
Having been in contact with the graffiti world since 2004, Sebas Velasco defined his creative process while completing a degree in Fine Arts at the University of País Vasco. After a period of nomadic studying (Uk, Barcelona, Cordoba…), his style developed during the completion of his Masters Degree in Painting at UPV/EHU.
His photographic, expressive brush stroke style reveals a a precise academic technique that contrasts sharply with the rawness of the street content in his works. Despite being an orphan to the egocentric world of graffiti letters, Sebas Velasco remains linked to this tight discipline and assigns it as one of the main themes in his work. In that sense, many of his canvases act as a window for us into everyday moments where strangers are caught in the act with their writer friends. During these moments, darkness has become increasingly more important.
So, under the title, “Permanent Midnight”, Sebas Velasco frames up a repertoire of works that are both literally and metaphorically punctuated with darkness that transcend the abrupt social context in which we find ourselves. The redundant oxymoron found in Sebas Velasco’s sensational work will guide us between mystery and melancholy with a bright, yet at the same time, gritty portrayal of urban gloom. This is an exhibition that will leave an impact on the artistic sensibilities in any person, whether they be a lover of graffiti, of art, or simply a curious onlooker. And remember, the night is darkest right before sunrise.
