Part of the graffiti, muralism and street art world calls for action on the street to demand freedom of expression in Spain.
After the notable cases of repression of freedom of expression in Spain, which include prison sentences for tweets or rap songs, different artists and entities related to the graffiti, street art and mural world have joined the “No Callarem” platform.
The manifesto signed by almost 200 people represents a way to stand up to censorship, media manipulation, corruption, political persecution, inequality before the law and, in short, the constant violation of human rights by the Spanish government.
“The only walls that we can and want to allow are those that serve for painting expression freely, while using criticism and satire.“
The first action promoted by this initiative took place last May with a 57-mete long mural with the message “Llibertat d’expressió” (Freedom of Speech) on the rooftop of the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris (Barcelona). A new call has been launched for the weekend of July 21st and 22nd which encourages the use of painting as a means of free expression in public space with messages and slogans in favor of freedom♦
