Montana Gallery Barcelona presents the exhibition “Fragments” by the French artist SINO.
SINO’s graffiti has been a fundamental part of his artistic career, as a form of survival. His graffiti is still present in a fragmentary way, dispersed as a legacy that could never have been imagined years ago. His painting has voluntarily moved away from the walls of the city into the comfortable and cozy space of the living rooms, stripped of its original identity as a filthy relic of the suburbs. A slice of the city, of the insecurity, of the environmental cacophony and tumult that reaches the white walls of our homes.
These paintings emerge as fragments and remains of walls. Tags and pieces of graffiti torn from the city and recontextualised in a room, in the asepsis of our homes. It is from this contrast and paradox that the beauty and poetry revealing the transience of graffiti is born. These fragments of walls erected into paintings are like a window on the suburban world, like an invitation to skip class. They give the possibility to become familiar with the scent of graffiti, to smell the spray fumes and to observe what our eyes as spectators cannot perceive outside the context of the street. Thus, within this framework, graffiti and tags not only cease to be invisible, but we find in them beauty, vitality, shapes, colors and spectres that we would disapprove of or not even look at in another context. It is then that they take on a new meaning and become works of art.
